Laravel MCP 1.0 Released: First-Class Model Context Protocol for PHP

The Laravel core team has officially tagged Laravel MCP 1.0, delivering a first-class package for building and exposing Model Context Protocol servers directly within existing Laravel applications.

Rather than treating AI agents as external scripts making ad-hoc database queries or raw REST calls, the package formalizes how LLM agents discover, inspect, and invoke backend business logic:

  • Full MCP Spec Compliance: Built against the latest 2026-07-28 protocol specification, supporting tools, dynamic resources, and prompt templates.
  • Expressive Tool Definition: Tools and resources are defined using familiar Laravel conventions, complete with Form Request-style validation, dependency injection via the service container, and authorization via standard Gates and Policies.
  • Dual-Transport Architecture: Native support for both local stdio (for IDE assistants like Cursor, Claude Code, and Windsurf) and stateless HTTP with Server-Sent Events (SSE) for remote agent swarms.
  • Searchable Tool Catalogs & Cache Hints: Implements tag-based discovery and schema caching so reasoning models do not saturate token budgets re-fetching extensive tool manifests.
  • Production Security: Ships with out-of-the-box OAuth 2.0 with PKCE and token scoping, ensuring multi-tenant agents only execute permitted domain actions.

The StackCompass Framing

The release of Laravel MCP 1.0 marks a critical inflection point for modern web frameworks: agent-facing interfaces are becoming as essential as browser-facing views and client-facing REST/GraphQL APIs.

By bridging MCP directly into Laravel’s validation, queue, and authorization layers, engineering teams can build reliable agent tooling without writing fragile translation layers or exposing raw SQL access. For architectures adopting Document-Driven Development and autonomous multi-agent pipelines, exposing verified domain models through a standardized protocol turns standard web applications into native agent runtime substrates.
